A Better Reward Experience: More Engagement, Less Friction, Greater Value

A Better Reward Experience: More Engagement, Less Friction, Greater Value

At Heap Up, users can answer questions from various fields and earn rewards. Recently, I had the opportunity to work on a project to add new rewards to the platform's catalog, bringing exciting updates to our users. This initiative also allowed me to implement some refinements to enhance the overall platform experience.

My role

I worked as the Lead Product Designer, closely collaborating with a Product Manager, developers, and the Data and Marketing teams.

I took part in all stages of the design process, including discovery, data analysis, user research, sketching, prototyping, usability testing, high-fidelity screens, and copywriting.

Challenge

Problem: The existing rewards catalog was limited and repetitive, reducing engagement across different user segments.

Objectives:

  • Refresh the catalog with more diverse and valuable reward options.

  • Improve visual design and usability of the redemption flow.

  • Encourage users to redeem rewards beyond the most common categories.

Design Process

  • Conducted competitive benchmarking to analyze how other reward programs structure catalogs and highlight incentives.

  • Mapped user behaviors and preferences, identifying underused rewards and opportunities for improvement.

  • Explored multiple approaches: reorganizing catalog hierarchy, emphasizing popular rewards, simplifying redemption flows, and refining voucher interactions.

  • Designed and tested prototypes for desktop and mobile, validating clarity, engagement, and ease of use.

Design Process

Solutions delivered:

  1. Catalog reorganization: rewards already redeemed appear prominently, increasing perceived value.

  2. Personalized ordering: reward suggestions adapt to users’ redemption history.

  3. Quick voucher access: added a one-click copy button for codes, improving usability.

  4. Redemption modal redesign: simplified, responsive layouts for desktop and mobile.

  5. Visual refinements: clear typography, improved contrast, and a modernized interface to boost trust and engagement.

Results

  • Users engaged more with previously underused reward categories.

  • Feedback highlighted a perception of the catalog as “fairer” and “more exciting to explore.”

  • Streamlined interactions (like voucher copying) reduced friction in redemption flows.

Learnings

  • Reinforced the value of usage data and behavioral insights to guide UX decisions.

  • Small refinements (like catalog order and copy buttons) can significantly improve satisfaction.

  • Designing consistently for multi-device experiences is critical in reward-based platforms.
